August 2018 Dear Marshall Hill Families,


Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!  Each year, we recommit to our district’s full value commitment:  “Be Here, Be Safe, Be Honest, Be Respectful, Let Go and Move On, and Set Goals.” This year we will do this through our year-long focus to “Spread Your Wings.” What does this mean? “Spread Your Wings,” means to prepare to try something new, or different this year without hesitation or worry.   As a school community, we're here to support all learners and we look forward to seeing just how far we fly together.


At Marshall Hill School each community member matters, and impacts the success of our K-6th-grade learners.  We invite our families to stay connected to Marshall Hill School through school-wide events, PTA membership, and social media.  


On Thursday, September 6th, 2018 Marshall Hill faculty and staff look forward to greeting all our students for the first day of school. On Monday, September 18, 2018, we will host our parent/guardians for Back to School Night starting at 7pm. As you prepare for the year ahead, please review the following information.


Introduction of New Staff:

Attendance:

Attendance is a critical part of student success and our instructional day is from 8:35-2:50 pm. Students are marked late at 8:40am. Please note tardiness, and absences are tracked. Please review the board policy (5200: Attendance) for additional details regarding attendance.


Appointments:

Marshall Hill School welcomes parent/guardians involvement, but for the safety of the school community, the West Milford Township School district requests all appointments with teachers, child study team members, and the principal to be arranged at least 24 hours in advance.  Should you need assistance in scheduling an appointment, please call our main office for assistance (973) 728-3430.


Allergies/Birthday Treats:

Marshall Hill School is committed to the health and safety of each student.  All classrooms are nut-free rooms, but our cafeteria is nut friendly. Therefore, students can bring nut products in for lunch. In addition, our nurse will send home a notice to families regarding any additional allergies in the classroom (i.e., dairy, soy, specific fruit) without identifying students individually.  


Marshall Hill School requests all families to send in birthday treats that are suitable for all students and to inform your classroom teachers ahead of time.  Also, any student with an allergy is encouraged to bring alternative “safe snacks” as a backup to use as a substitute if needed for class-wide events. Please consider substituting birthday food treats with birthday school supply treats (pencil, eraser, sticker, etc.).


Free and Reduced Lunch:

Parents are encouraged to fill out the “Free/Reduced Price Meal Application” online.  The link for online application is www.wmtps.org (WM Homepage), for families Food Services, Food Service information, Free/Reduced Lunch application form. Paper applications are available in the Marshall Hill School main office.


Forgotten Items:

At times parent/guardians need to drop off items to a student. Please ring the bell and place these items in the black and gold bin located outside our main entrance. The bin will be emptied shortly after the drop-off. Drop off items includes forms, lunches, instruments, and birthday treats. Moreover, students will not be permitted back into the building after 4 pm to retrieve forgotten items.


PTA:

We would love for all families to join our PTA!  The Parent/Teacher Association is how we accomplish goals as a community. Please join us for the first meeting at Back to School Night, on September 17th. We welcome all families and all levels of involvement. Come out and support all of our Marshall Hill Eagles!



Transportation, Bus Safety Information:

-Wait for the bus in a safe location that is away from traffic, ideally waiting in a designated school bus stop until the bus arrives.

-Dress for optimal visibility, especially in inclement weather when it can be difficult for the school bus driver and other motorists to see our students.

-Do not board the bus until it comes to a complete stop. Wait for the driver to open the door, which engages the “Stop” sign for oncoming motorists.

-Use the handrail and enter the bus in an orderly manner.

-Promptly find a seat, sit down, and buckle in the safety belt. Students with assigned seats on the bus should take their seat without issue.

-Keep backpacks and other belongings out of the center aisle. To ensure safety, store them under your seat or on your lap.

-Remain seated at all times while the bus is in motion.

-Keep arms, hands, legs, and heads inside of the bus at all times.

-Always follow the driver’s instructions and avoid situations that will distract the driver.

-Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing up or attempting to exit.

-Exit the bus in an orderly manner, without pushing fellow students.

-Only cross the street in front of the bus as it is very difficult for the driver to see students crossing behind the bus.

-Wait for the driver to check traffic before crossing the street and be on the lookout for inattentive motorists.


Transportation, AM Drop Off:

It is highly recommended students take the bus to school to ensure on-time arrival and for schedule consistency.  However, if you are driving your student to school, morning drop off is by our Kindergarten rooms and will begin at 8:25 and end at 8:32 am.   Please stay in your car, pull up to the doors, and have your student exit the vehicle quickly. A staff member will be there to greet your child. If you arrive after 8:32 you will need to drop your student off by the main entrance.  


Transportation: PM Pick Up:

It is highly recommended students take the bus home or to aftercare.  When you need to pick up your student(s), please send in a “Marshall Hill School Pick Up Request Form" (click here for a link to the form) the morning of the pickup or email (MHSPickUp@gmail.com) noting the pickup request by 1:50 pm daily.  A pack of forms will be sent home the first week of school. It will also be posted in the Virtual Backpack. If you will pick up your child daily, please send one note to the office attention addressing this need.


When picking up your student, please ring the bell and state your name and who you are picking up.  Names will be cross-checked on the office list. The office will kindly ask you to wait outside until 2:50 pm.   At that time the doors will open, and parent/guardians can proceed up the stairs to the sign-out table. At that time, a faculty member will assist you in signing out your student(s). During this process you may be asked to present I.D.  Once you have your student(s), we kindly ask that you exit the building and enjoy the rest of your day. Furthermore, students will not be permitted back into the building for forgotten items after 4 pm. Sincerely, Janet Cash Principal
