  1. How many absences are permitted before a loss of credit?

    • 18 absences from a full year course

    • 9 absences from a semester (½ yr.) course


  1. What are my responsibilities when my child is absent?

    • Parents must call the school’s attendance secretary (ext. 7073) before 9am and provide a reason for the absence.

    • Upon return, a note signed by the parent OR medical/legal documentation of the absence must be turned in to the attendance secretary in the main office. Include the student’s name, date of & reason for the absence. Notes do not excuse an absence, but they are kept on file for future reference. Notes must be received within five (5) days of an absence.


  1. What days are excused?

According to NJ State policy, the following may be immediately excused with documentation:

  • Religious holidays recognized by the State

  • Take our Children to Work Day

  • 3 college visits for 11th & 12th graders (students must secure documentation from the Admission Office on the day of the campus visit)    This is a new allowance.


  1. Should I bother with documentation for absences?

Yes! All documentation is logged and filed.  When a student exceeds 18 days of absence in a  

full year class (9 in a semester course), credit will be lost.  This loss may be appealed.  During the

appeals process the Attendance Committee may give consideration to “reasonable number” of

notes.  They will evaluate:

  • doctor’s notes for an illness

  • documented college visits - all grade levels (from admissions offices)

  • notification of death in the family

  • verfied driver’s license test appointments

  • documented, required court appearances

Notes do not guarantee a restoration of credit, but are important to the decision making process.

Check-ups, dental and orthodontic appointments should be made outside of school hours.


  1. Does my child actually need to visit the doctor?

Yes!  A doctor may not excuse an absence without having seen a child. “It was reported to me…” is unacceptable.  Notes should include a reason for the absence.


  1. Can a medical office fax the note in?

Yes!  The fax, however, must come from the medical office where the visit was made.

Please provide the HS fax # = 973-208-0912 (Consider storing this number on your phone.)


  1. Can I fax medical notes to school?

No, we will no longer accept notes faxed in by parents – there have been several cases of alterations of these legal documents.


  1. Are vacations an excused absence?

No, family vacations are not excused.



  1. Am I contacted prior to attendance becoming a serious issue?

Yes!  Warning letters are posted on the Parent Portal under Correspondences – please click on this

      tab often (there is no notification system in the portal, indicating you have mail.)

  • A Honeywell alert of the correspondence is sent when an attendance letter is posted.

  • Update your portal contacts with the school as well as for the Honeywell Alert system; consider adding text messages to your alerts.


  1. Am I contacted if my child is in danger of losing credit due to absence?

    • When your child has accrued half of the allowable absences in a semester or full year course, in addition to the notifications above, written notifications are also mailed to your home.

    • Your child’s school counselor will be in contact with you to discuss your child’s absenteeism and any extenuating circumstances.


  1. What is a class “cut”?

    • A student who is absent from class 20 or more minutes without authorization or permission while in attendance that day will be considered to be cutting a class.


  1. Am I alerted if my child cuts a class?

Yes! A letter is mailed home on the day that each and every cut is verified.  The letter will detail the cut policy for your reference.  The same letter is posted on the Parent Portal under Correspondences.


  1. Can lates to class impact my child?

Yes. Board of Education policy states that every five (5) lates to class of less than 20 minutes will

constitute an absence and be assigned a detention.  These absences count toward loss of credit.


  1. Am I alerted about lates to class?

    • You can track both your child’s daily & period attendance on the Parent Portal (menu to the left).

    • Under period attendance, lates, absences, field trips etc., are all recorded by day and period. Clicking on Reason Totals above the chart will provide up-to-date numbers in each category for each class.

    • When your child earns an absence for 5 lates to an individual class, a letter informing you will be sent home.


  1. Can my child appeal a loss of credit due to absences?

Yes!  Any student may file an appeal with the Attendance Review Committee if he/she has lost

     credit in a class for absenteeism/cuts.

  • When credit is lost, a letter is sent home alerting you to this occurance.

  • An appeal must be filed within 5 business days of the absence/cut causing the loss of credit.

  • Students are required to attend their appeal. Parents are invited to attend the appeal, but it is not a requirement of an appeal.

  • Please note that appeals are only granted in accordance with Board of Education Policy 5200.2 as provided in the student handbook.  Individual circumstances are considered, while a focus on providing an appropriate education to our students is maintained.  Appeals are not granted lightly.
